Crawling up and down the foothills of Prescott's Bradshaw Mountains, it's safe to say the new StoneRidge Golf Course offers a challenge unlike any other in this state. The first clue that sumething is different in Presott Valley drops on theinto the property, where the distant fairways resemble
manicured ski runs before the snow. In fact, if the rating system for ski
trails were employed, this golf course would bear a black diamond posting,
and even the double-black sign on a few holes. Barely a month old, this is
one of the few golf courses in Arizona that makes no pretense for playing
just a little tougher than the average track.
Course designer, Randy Heckenkemper routed 18 holes in every direction --
including up and down -- through the 350-foot vertical rise of ridges,
canyons, and natural washes, as well as boulder outcroppings and rugged
chaparral ... situated masterfully in the landscape to be more inviting than
threatening. Like the moguls on a ski run, the waiting terrain has a way of
pumping up eager takers. There is plenty of room to play for the golfers who
picks their best route from the appropriate tees, where the play is text
book risk-reward.

SunCor's Sensation in Prescott Valley
|
On more than a few holes, par or better is dependent more on wry
maneuverability and carefully gauged club selection, rather than the one big
shot. Number 18, a winding, downhill 600-yard par-5, can be a little
confounding the first time around, but turns out to be another case study
in course management.
Beyond the challenge and natural beauty of StoneRidge Golf Course, the reasonable green
fees are are perhaps its most amazing feature. In this day and age, it is
extremely gratifying to know that guests can play this high-caliber
daily-fee track for no more than $55 in peak season (apply the SunCor
Players Club Card for even greater value).
StoneRidge Golf Course is located in Prescott Valley, approximately 80 miles
north of Phoenix, and 45 minutes over Mingus Mountain from Sedona -- and is
a 'must play' from any direction. For information or to set a tee time call the Pro Shop at 928-772-6500.
