Desert Mountain, High Sonoran Desert Lifestyle
North Scottsdale possesses some of the most beautiful desert landscape in the greater Phoenix area. Many years ago, a land developer had a vision of an upscale community and multiple golf courses. With elevations rising to over 3,400 feet, this 8,000 acre parcel has risen to its full potential, showcasing some of the most beautiful homes I have ever seen. The natural landscape of the Continental Mountains enriches each of the six golf courses and homes that have created Desert Mountain. This member-owned golf and recreational community is the only private club in the world with six Jack Nicklaus Signature golf courses. The club celebrates its 25th anniversary in November 2012.
A unique golfing experience is offered on each of the six award-winning courses: Renegade, Cochise, Geronimo, Apache, Chiricahua and Outlaw. Desert Mountain has the most extensive golf practice facilities in Arizona with multiple pitching, chipping, putting and bunker areas, plus four separate practice ranges with target greens. In addition, the club recently opened a $1.6 million Golf Performance Center, the first major new amenity completed at Desert Mountain since the turnover of the community to its members in January 2011. It is the only facility of its kind in the country featuring the most advanced technology available in the industry today, all in one location. Among its capabilities are 3-D motion capture, Doppler radar and four-camera video motion analysis to help golfers of all skill levels improve and understand their game.
Renegade, the first course built, offers multiple tees and two sets of flagsticks to choose from, so you can choose how much challenge or how much fun you want to have that day. Also this course has two unique par 3 greens with bunkers in the middle of them.
Cochise has the distinction of hosting The Tradition from 1988 to 2001, and is the host course for the 2012 Charles Schwab Cup Championship. Jack Nicklaus himself considers the course one of the most picturesque in the world and one that demands thoughtfulness and strategy in its approach. Part of its unique design is an island green shared by the par three seventh hole, the courseís signature hole, and the par five 15th hole, truly a unique setting.
Geronimo possesses some of the most dramatic elevation changes, offering views of distant mountains across the valley. Abundant natural washes parallel and cross the fairways ending with one of the more dramatic par 3ís around. The 18th hole is almost postage stamp size with fall-away edges, containing grass and bunkers and a split-level green. What fun!
Apache appeals to golfers who prefer a more traditional approach to the game. Winding gracefully through gentle desert terrain, the 7,211-yard course features rolling fairways, ample greens with subtle, grassy catch areas for a more relaxed style of play, but with deceptively sloping putting surfaces. The 18th hole has two separate greens: one that is easily found with a well-struck approach; and one that is set into a hillside fronted by an unforgiving wash.
Chiricahua is considered the crown jewel of the collection by combining the architecture of its four predecessors on this 7,197-yard desert target course. The course features elevation changes ranging from a low point of 2,800 feet to its highest point of 3,300 feet. Eight holes play downhill, nine play uphill and one plays sideways for an exhilarating combination. This course has the most guest play because of its stellar views of the Valley below.
Outlaw is Desert Mountainís sixth and final course, which opened in 2003, is located on a 176-acre site adjacent to the Tonto National Forest. The Scottish links-style course has striking, unencumbered views of Pinnacle Peak, the McDowell Mountains and Four Peaks. Playing at approximately 7,100 yards from the back tees, the course offers generous landing areas and was carefully designed to eliminate forced carries from the tees.
Desert Mountain has great golf, a staff that defines affability, magnificent views and landscaping, impeccable cleanliness, and an atmosphere of cordiality.
